Colab Alloa

We've had an amazing couple of days this week hosting Google for Education events in our little Alloa Co.lab.

I guess we're feeling a bit proud tonight as we reflect on it all: proud of the feedback on the space, for sure, but also proud that we brought all those people to Clackmannanshire and to Alloa.

People came from all over Scotland: Stornoway, Stonehaven and Tobermory. They got ferries! Google's UK lead even made the trip up from London and our amazing colleague and friend Louise came all the way from Denmark. They came to Alloa. And that's an honour for us. We were sick of people putting Alloa down all the time.

And do you know what? That's what Co.lab was all about. Folk can't always get their heads around what it is (πŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆπŸ™ˆ) and I guess that's because it's many things: meeting space, intimate events space, digital skills lab and co-working/collaborative space. But to be a place where switched on people came together has always been our core mission.

It's our field of dreams really. We wanted something different for Alloa. We built it and we hoped people would come. We made it the perfect space for our work and we took a punt on the fact that others might like it too. We're all dead chuffed that they do.

It's not been easy at all. There have been so many scary times when we couldn't make those ends meet and there's been tears a plenty when we felt like we'd messed up. It's been raw. I guess anyone who has their own business can relate to that. It's not the safe and sensible option with the good pension at the end, that's for sure. My worried family members point that out often ebough πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

This past week or two we've met a documentary filmaker who's gonna be moving in to the lab and a guy who runs a very successful sports podcast. They're both from Alloa. We've also hosted our own podcast with a guy from Sauchie who's doing great things in gaming and live streaning and his last podcast featured a local Instagram user who has grown a massive audience in a few months for just putting herself out there in an honest and brave way.

The digital world enables any of us from anywhere to benefit from online opportunity. It means it doesn't matter that the breweries closed down and the mines and mills have become museums. Let's get together and explore how tech can transform your work or business. There's an exciting community developing around Co.lab and anyone is welcome to join us.

Colab Alloa

Hey everyone. Just a reminder that we've cancelled our networking events this week.

Emails have gone out this morning to all who signed up. We had ten or so for one of them and a few each for the others.

We'll get our heads together around other events and be sure to let you know.

Fab fun afternoon of CPD for the teachers of Bridge of Allan Primary at CO.LAB today. QR treasure hunt β€œescape from CO.LAB” provided interactive hands on learning and generated some competitive spirit amongst the group!
